The world renowned Mocha coffee is named after the ancient port town of Moka on the Arabian Peninsula; now part of Yemen. Mocha coffee is rare and hard to come by, but a real jewel when you do. It has a sweet mellow body and an almost chocolate aftertaste. Indeed, this coffee is so interesting and unique that the name "Mocha" is now used to describe a variety of chocolate beverages. Mocha was the first coffee to be exported to Europe, and the first coffee trees imported to the West Indies were descendants of this area. (Now, of course, Caribbean coffee's have taken on characteristics unique unto themselves.)
Coffee in Yemen is processed by the dry method, as is much of the coffee from that part of the world. Irrigation is of paramount importance to Yemen, as the country is arid and prone to drought. Most coffee in Yemen is grown from 3,000 - 7,000 feet on small terraced plantations.
